" The Wreck of the Delaware Exhibition "

The Delaware floundered on rocks at Wakapuaka near Nelson on 3 September 1863. Huria Matenga, chieftainess of the Ngatiawa, Ngatitama and Ngatitoa tribes played an important role in the rescue of the ship's crew when she swam with a rope through the stormy sea to save their lives.

Collection purchased by the Ngati Tama Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust and presented to the Bishop Suter Art Gallery Trust Board on long term loan in 1996
